Gum recessions and notches at the gum line

Do you have unsightly gum recession or notches at the gum line of your front teeth? The gum resession can be caused by a number of situations. The most commom is incorrect oral hygiene practices at home. Brushing your teeth at least 3 times per day along with proper flossing will keep your teeth and gums healthy. Removing any irritations will prevent cavities, and keep the gums healthy and not receed. Some patients naturally have thin gum tissue that can only be corrected with a gum graft procedure. These can be done much easier than a few years ago and can be a long term solution for correcting the health and aesthetic problem. A tooth that is too far forward, will also have gum tissue that is higher than the other teeth.

Preventing cavities at the gum line will also help. Each time a filling is placed at the gum line, the gum will not grow over it, but will receed leading to gum and bone loss in a short period of time. Another way to prevent notching at the gum line is to use a soft or extra soft toothbrush. A hard or medium brush will act as sandpaper and literally remove tooth structure, especially on the softer root of the tooth, but can happen on the harder enamel over time. Keep up with your professional dental cleanings to ensure little problems are addressed and treated before they become costly, cosmetic issues later.
