When I went for my check up on Monday my doctor and I discussed breastfeeding in more detail. I told her that I was willing to try pumping to see if I was able to and then I found out some more details. If you have ever had any kind of surgery pertaining to your breasts the most likely way you can still breastfeed is if the doctor comes up under the breast to cut open. However, if the surgeon cuts off the entire nipple there is typically little hope of getting the ducts to reconnect. Bummer. I'm about 95% sure that is what my surgeon did - removed the whole nipple. I told my doctor, "You realize that's 400 calories a pop I'm going to be missing out on?!" But she laughed and said it's a catch 22 anyway because people aren't entirely informed. The baby is still taking away so many nutrients from the mother that that the mom ends up ravenous and eating more than she should anyway. The month before our baby is born I'm supposed to try and see if i am able to squeeze any milk from the nipple and if none comes out this usually means I will not be able to breastfeed.
